John
"We all know that anyone can sing—it's just a matter of doing the right exercises to help you reach your goal and establishing the right singing routines."
He was excited, "but it was already like that, (Vocal coach and singing teacher)"It's as if you're meant to be there," he says. He's talking about the 2019 International Music Award (formerly known as the Echo). Right next to the red carpet is a stage where Johannes performs his own songs. "It was awesome—I was a little nervous, but not too much. I was on a roll this year, and that was one of those goosebump moments.” Overwhelmed by the crowd, he savors the moment and celebrates his music. What brought him here?
First and foremost: his dedication. Although his mother plays the guitar and his grandfather used to sing, music isn't really a big thing in his family. But Johannes has loved singing ever since he was a child—in the car, for example.
At the age of nine, he took the stage for the first time in Landesbergen on the Weser. He sang—but not just anything—rather, a song he had written himself about the region, an ABBA cover. With that song and his bell-like voice, he rang in the New Year for the audience.
In sixth grade, Johannes started having voice problems because he wasn't breathing properly. Ever since then: "There are a lot of ways to mess up your voice, which is why I pay special attention to vocal care, technique, and breathing."
He sang in the children’s and youth choir until ninth grade. His voice was his first instrument; the guitar was his second. Writing came naturally to him. His annual project back then: a novel. Later, he wrote poems and his first songs. As a person with a wide range of interests, he began playing the guitar at age 15—teaching himself, of course—and took up gliding. Aiming high, never losing his curiosity about the world—that’s probably the best way to describe Johannes.
With his plane ticket in his pocket, he’s now writing a term paper on songwriting. Once he’s reached this milestone as well, he resolutely grabs his guitar, packs a few clothes, and travels by train across Germany. The journey is the destination. Along the way, he passes through many of Germany’s state capitals. That’s where he wants to go to do what he does best—sing. He fills shopping streets and town hall squares with his cover set, consisting of songs by Ed Sheeran, Milo, the Beatles, and others.
Right after graduating from high school, he moves to Hamburg, takes singing lessons, performs at "open-mic nights," and starts writing songs again. One of these songs has already been released: Kieper's "Streets of London" is available for you to listen to on all major streaming platforms.
What does his music sound like? A bit like it used to. Singer-songwriter pop with a touch of indie is what makes his sensitive compositions so distinctive—and catchy. They take you on a vivid journey. You can hear more of this on his EP "Fragile Heart.".
Back to Hamburg: He started out studying business administration, switched to English and linguistics, and then the pandemic hit. It’s hard to believe, but there’s a silver lining: Johannes decided to follow his heart’s calling. He moved to Bristol, England, to study songwriting and vocals. After a year, he returned to Hamburg and continued his studies in vocal performance at BIMM (British Institute of Modern Music).
Johannes, playing the role of a street musician, is enjoying a comeback. He plays in Hamburg’s Kiez neighborhood, performs at weddings, takes the stage at major city festivals, and even appears on the NDR livestream. He wants to gain as much live performance experience as possible and earn the money he needs for college.
His first single will be released in 2022, and his first EP in 2023. He produces most of his music himself. All of these experiences make him an accomplished and empathetic vocal coach who understands the struggles his students face. Whether you’re struggling with vocal techniques, finding the right singing style, or producing your own songs—he’s been there, and that’s exactly what makes his vocal lessons so comprehensive.
"My lessons for beginners or anyone looking to rediscover their voice focus on sharpening their awareness of their voice and strengthening it."
Traditional, lecture-style teaching isn't his thing at all. It has to be fun and relevant to your voice. In his classes, he starts right off with some humorous breathing exercises as a quick warm-up. Then he moves straight into the first vocal exercises, often using advertising jingles or the hooks from big pop songs.
"You are the best judge of your own singing—because you know how it feels. A vocal coach helps you reflect on that and learn what each sensation means. A vocal coach gives you the motivation to grow and provides you with the right tools.".
"You can think of singing as a workout. Before you start bench pressing, you start with circuit training. It's important not to overexert your voice."
