And hardly any other topic creates as much unnecessary pressure. Many singers come to me feeling that they have to, when singing, something big with their breathing. More air. More tension. More control. And they wonder why that’s exactly what makes their voice sound constricted.

The problem isn't that breathing isn't important. On the contrary.
The problem is, that it is often isolated, mystified, and overridden.

Breathing is neither a spiritual ritual nor an act of muscular strength. It is a process of coordination. Calm. Precise. And effective when it not is the main focus.

In this article, I'll debunk a few persistent myths about breathing and show you, What Really Helps Your Voice – without any esoteric nonsense, without abdominal crunches, and without constantly focusing on something that should actually work on its own.

Why Breathing Techniques in Singing Are So Often Misunderstood

When people think of breathing techniques, many think of more air. Breathe in more deeply. Breathe more fully. Consciously push your belly out. This seems logical—but it’s often counterproductive for your voice.

Singing isn't about moving as much air as possible, but rather to release the right amount at the right time. The voice is not a wind instrument that sounds better with maximum airflow. On the contrary: Too much air makes the sound unstable, breathy, or strained.

A phrase I often say during coaching sessions:
It's not the inhalation that's your problem. It's what you do with the air afterward.

Many breathing problems don't arise because someone is „breathing incorrectly,“ but rather because when singing tried too hard ... Too much control. Too much action. Too much fear of not being good enough.

„Support while singing“—what that actually means (and what it doesn’t)

„Support“ is one of those words that everyone uses but hardly anyone can explain clearly. No wonder there's confusion.

"Support" means not:

Tighten your abs

hold one's breath

press against the sound

Apply downward force

Support also doesn't mean you should constantly be thinking about your abdominal muscles. That's like mentally commenting on every step you take while walking. It slows you down, not makes you more stable.

What Supports really means is a Balance between:

the air pressure from below

and the resistance in the larynx

When this balance is right, singing doesn't feel like „holding,“ but rather like be carried. The pitch stays steady without you having to hold it.

Support is not a muscle condition.
Support is the result of good coordination.

Controlling Your Breath While Singing—Less Is Often More

A common problem in practice:
„I run out of breath when I sing.“
Or:
„I lose control at the end of the phrase.“

In many cases, this isn't due to a lack of air, but rather to excessive air consumption. The voice „fades away“ because the airflow isn't regulated.

Typical signs:

The sound becomes breathy at the end

the intonation drops

You gasp for air frantically

The body tenses up reflexively

„Breathing more deeply“ won't help here; what will help is a a more relaxed start. Your voice needs resistance. If the tone is too open, too airy, or too forced at the beginning, you won't have anything left to work with later on.

A simple thought that often works wonders:
Sound does not begin with air—but with resistance.

Breathing Problems While Singing—Common Causes (Instead of Just Treating the Symptoms)

Many singers describe breathing problems, but they actually mean something else. Here are a few common misunderstandings:

„I'm having trouble breathing“ → often: excessive tension in the larynx

„I get out of breath quickly“ → often: using too much air

„I have to strain“ → often: wrong pitch or wrong vowel

„I hold my breath“ → often: fear of losing control

The key point: Breathing problems are rarely just breathing problems.
They are almost always linked to pitch, vowels, volume, or mental tension.

That's why I never work on breathing in isolation, but always in the context of voice training. If you're interested in learning more about this, here's a good overview:
👉 Understanding Breathing in the Context of Voice Training

Singing Without Running Out of Breath—Why Confidence Is More Important Than Technique

„For many people, “singing without running out of breath” is less a technical issue than an emotional one. Running out of breath often happens when the nervous system goes into alarm mode. The stage. A recording session. A high note. The pressure to perform.

The body doesn't react to this logically, but rather reflexively: shallow breathing, tension, a compulsion to control. And suddenly, everything feels constricted—even though, anatomically speaking, there would be enough air.

Here comes Vocal Health into play. Not as a gentle warm-up, but as a sustainable foundation. When your body knows that singing isn't a struggle, your breathing often regulates itself.

A good place to start:
👉 Avoid Straining Your Voice and Keep It Healthy in the Long Run

What helps instead: breathing exercises that support the voice

When I use breathing exercises in coaching, I do so based on three clear principles:

Breathing follows the voice—not the other way around

Coordination Beats Strength

Less Focus, More Impact

Specifically, this means:

Short, functional breathing exercises instead of long breathing rituals

Always do the exercises along with the audio

Focus on Letting Go instead of Do

In online singing lessons, breathing is therefore never an end in itself, but rather part of a larger context:
👉 Experience Breathing Exercises in Coaching

Context: What Do Reliable Sources Say About Breathing?

Even outside of coaching sessions, there is a consensus: Healthy voice production is based on efficient breathing, not on maximum breathing capacity.

Estill Voice Training describes breathing as a variable system that adapts to style, volume, and tone—not as a rigid „abdominal or chest model.“.

The NIDCD (National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders) emphasizes that overexertion and poor breathing habits are common causes of voice problems—not a lack of lung capacity.

Both of these confirm what we see in practice every day: Your voice doesn't need a show. It needs balance.

Your 5-Minute Breathing Test

Before you start „working“ on your breathing, it’s worth taking an honest look at where you stand.

I have a 5-Minute Breathing Test Created using:

a brief guide (PDF)

More detailed information on the topic

clear observations rather than evaluations

Not to correct you, but to show you, Where Your Breathing Helps Your Voice—and Where It Gets in the Way.

The test is calm, technically sound, and free of esoteric breathing techniques.

5-Minute Breathing Test

We'll email you the 5-minute breathing test right away—it's free.

EmailEnter your email address here
Have a PDF sent to me

<div class="hustle-error-message" style="display: none;" data-default-error="Das hat nicht geklappt.
