# Singing Lessons for Kids: Our Guide for Young Singing Talents

Of course, as parents, we want only the best for our little singers. It’s not uncommon for us to go too far or simply not know what our child’s voice needs. At what age do singing lessons make sense for our youngest children? What should vocal coaching for children include to ensure it doesn’t cause harm and promotes progress in a healthy way? We address all these questions in this article—so that your child, too, can experience the pure joy of singing and benefit from it as much as possible.

At what age can children start learning to sing?

Do they only produce squeaky sounds, or is there more to it? These and similar questions occupy parents„ minds before they decide on singing lessons. And rightly so—after all, voice training should also be meaningful. In fact, there’s no lower age limit. The appropriate age to start singing varies from child to child. As long as learning to sing is done in a playful way and in small doses, there’s no reason why children as young as three shouldn’t start learning to use their voices.

What’s important is that your child enjoys it and is willing to engage with music. The voice is our primary means of expression; we use it constantly. That’s why one thing is particularly important to us: When it comes to teaching children to sing, we emphasize voluntary participation—our number one communication tool is far too important for us to subject its use to pressure and coercion at such a young age.

Early singing lessons for children not only promote musical development but also strengthen self-confidence and social skills. You can find out more about our offerings for young singers on our main page for singing lessons.

Learning to Sing in a Child-Friendly Way: Here’s How!

For children under five, a playful approach works particularly well in singing lessons. Even as they get older, the focus should remain on making learning to sing fun and effortless.

Our approach to singing lessons for children places great emphasis on playful learning that awakens a love of music. Discover how we can support your child on our page about singing lessons.

When it comes to singing, children have a strength that we adults have mostly lost—they use their voices intuitively. They usually practice natural diaphragmatic breathing and know, without even thinking about it, how to imitate sounds. The advantage is obvious: this way of singing or forming sounds—without even thinking about it—is almost always healthy for the voice. Due to stress and life circumstances, we in affluent societies lose this natural connection more and more as we get older. Being able to sing well or use your vocal cords healthily is by no means a question of age, but rather a question of access to our voice.

“The fact that children do the right thing completely intuitively is something a vocal coach can and should use in singing lessons.„ – Carl Keaton

In early childhood, for example, so-called “primal sounds” are very well suited for developing vocal function. For pop singing, we’re talking about sounds like a cat’s meow or a baby’s cry to create a twang in the voice, or a puppy’s whimper to produce a bit more of a “cry.” This not only helps the youngest children learn to use their own voices in a targeted way, but it’s also a lot of fun for them. Children’s voices are very high, usually in the soprano range. Every voice is unique, but as a general rule, voice training for children does not go lower than soprano. Starting at age five, children’s musicals, for example, are also a great way to practice listening and imitation.

Duration:

“The younger the children are, the shorter the lesson can be. It’s better to have half an hour or 20 minutes of singing lessons twice a week than one hour of voice training all at once.” – Carl Keaton

Singing Lessons During Voice Change – Hit or Miss?

Even when boys and girls go through voice change, vocal coaching can continue. However, we do not recommend that beginners start vocal lessons at this exact time, and the voice should under no circumstances be overtaxed during the transition process. The guiding principle here is: Less is more! Similar to what we recommend for the youngest students, we suggest short vocal lesson sessions, but several times a week. Some exercises or pitches aren’t possible during this time, but this is only temporary. In very rare cases, problems with the vocal cords can arise during voice change. In this case, it’s always necessary to consult a doctor and/or a speech-language pathologist.

Conclusion: It’s definitely helpful to keep at it during voice change—this way, teenagers become familiar right away with their new pitch range, “sweet spot,” and all other changes in their voice.

Learning to sing at home or at a music school?

Both are possible, and in our experience, both work very well. Some children feel more comfortable learning to sing in their familiar surroundings and are more likely to open up during singing lessons at home. That’s why online lessons are also ideal for kids and teens. When it comes to the youngest children, parental presence is necessary—at least at the beginning—but this is no different at the studio.

Here, the vocal coach is more accessible, which can be an advantage when teaching young children. For example, we offer the option of taking a few introductory lessons at the studio and then switching to online lessons later. This way, the vocal coach and the student can get to know each other, which helps younger children build the confidence they need for the subsequent online lessons; but it’s not absolutely necessary—for many children, it works just fine without an in-person session.

Is learning to sing online also suitable for beginners?

Yes, without a doubt. A good vocal coach can see the student’s movements via the video stream, listens closely, and recognizes what the voice needs. Instructions for vocal exercises are also given very precisely and demonstrated in online voice training. Online singing lessons are on par with in-person singing lessons in terms of quality, provided you have a good internet connection. Aside from not having to commute, there’s another advantage: the session can be recorded. This makes it all the easier to practice voice training between singing lessons.

Is your vocal coach “Kids Approved”?

A vocal coach who works with children should have relevant experience. Children learn differently. He or she should know how to teach exercises in an age-appropriate and fun way. For this to work, creativity is also required—simply singing the scale up and down over and over again isn’t suitable for younger children. Even the youngest singers can learn, for example, to control their breathing if the vocal coach finds the right exercises with a little patience and dedication. With these exercises, practicing at home becomes even more fun. Of course, there must be a good rapport, and the teacher should possess the necessary sensitivity for a playful approach to singing lessons. For your screenshot, here’s a checklist:

What qualities should a vocal coach have for child-friendly lessons, and what should their services include?

A free trial lesson to get to know each other

An understanding of child-friendly learning

Sufficient experience teaching the soprano voice range

A child-friendly song selection appropriate for the child’s age

Patience

A playful approach to learning to sing

The option for shorter lessons

Online lessons and in-person lessons

Possibly group lessons for siblings
